are my picks for the next ten great American heroes for the National Garden,
immortalized in stone and the hearts of us all.
Tom
Clancy
(1947-2013) – Author
Clancy was one of the most
successful popular authors of the late 20th century, especially his Jack Ryan
series.
Chuck
Colson
(1931-2012) – Attorney, Prison Ministry Advocate
Originally a corrupt politician
involved in Watergate, his experience in prison led to a conversion to
Christianity and prison ministry that help millions find their way.
Roger
Ebert
(1942 – 2013) – Film Critic
Quite simply, the greatest film
reviewer of all time.
Ray
Harryhausen
(1920 – 2013) – Visual Effects Artist
Known for his stop motion effects,
he greatly advanced the art of fantasy films.

Emil Kapaun
(1916 – 1951) – Military Chaplin
During his service in the Korean
War, he consistently helped the his fellow soldiers not just as a priest but
also finding food, raising morale, and resisting Communist indoctrination while
in a POW camp.

Kennan
(1904-2005) – Diplomat
Kennan was one of the earliest
government officials to recognize the dangers of global Communism, penning the
famous Long Telegram that would inspire the policy of Soviet containment.

Robin Olds
(1922 – 2007) – Military Pilot
A brilliant pilot and military
tactician, he epitomized youthful energy and bravery in both WWII and Vietnam.
He also represented the ingenuity of the average soldier against the often
bureaucratic buffoonery of the higher officials.

Robert Oppenheimer
(1904 – 1967) – Physicist
Leader of the Manhattan Project, he
orchestrated the development of fission, including both the atomic bomb and
nuclear energy.

A brilliant strategist and moral
authority, he created the Farm System and broke the color barrier by bringing
Jackie Robinson to the majors.

Shiver
(1915 – 2011) – Diplomat
Shiver was the first director of the
Peace Corps and constant advocate for a saner and more peaceful world.
