97th Academy Award Nominations: The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly

Here are some thoughts on this morning's slate of nominees:

The Good

1. Nominations for "I'm Just Ken" and Ryan Gosling for Barbie. It was a fun, comedic role of the type often overlooked.

2. Visual Effects for Godzilla Minus One. I will always support The King.

3. Chistopher Nolan for Best Director. I really hope he gets his due.

The Bad

1. America Ferria for Barbie. I actually predicted this slightly as a joke. It was a silly performance, one of cringiest of the year.

2. Many nominations for Poor Things. Yes, the production design was amazing, but the story is really creepy.

3. Nothing for The Sound of Freedom. I didn't think it had much of a shot, but this was the underdog story of the year, an indie film that out performed all the Best Picture nominees except Barbie and Oppenheimer

The Ugly

1. No animated feature nomination for The Super Mario Bros Movie. It was the 2nd highest grossing movie of the year easily the best animated film of the year. It reminds me of the lack of nomination for The LEGO Movie in 2014.

2. Many parents and civil rights groups like Moms for Liberty have heroicly fought unions and politicians to stop pornography and LGBT content in schools. Not only did the documentary short "The ABCs of Banning Books" have the audicity to criticize them, but the Academy foolishly thought it deserved a nomination.
