Animals are a pain to work with on set but a joy to see on the screen. Here is my list of the 25
greatest animal characters in television and film. This can include both imaginary or real animals and animals with human characteristics (ie, they can talk) but cannot include anthropomorphic animals with humanoid features. Pluto could count but not Goofy. They do not need to originate from film or television (ie, book adaptations) but should have a significant cinematic footprint.
1.
Triumph the Insult Comic Dog – Late Night
with Conan O’Brian
There are few real human
comedians who can compete with this pooch. His quick wit is unmatched.
2.
Pikachu – Pokémon
This adorable yet shocking
Pokémon has captured the hearts of millions of kids and the wallets of even
more adults.
3.
Salem – Sabrina, the Teenage Witch
Salem was originally a
monomaniacal witch who was sentenced to live as a cat for 100 years. He lives
as a pet to Sabrina and her family, providing comic relief and often getting to
various shenanigans. He has some of the series’ best dialogue and cutest
outfits.
4.
Lassie - Lassie
Lassie is the first great
television pet who saved poor Timmy probably hundreds of times.
5.
Bruce – Jaws
He rarely worked but when he
did, it was never safe to go in the water again.
6.
Garfield – Garfield and Friends
It’s always a crapshoot when you
lend a voice to a beloved character but Lorenzo Music was the perfect fit for
this lazy cat with a ravenous appetite.
7.
Gromit – Wallace & Gromit
The straight man to the British
icon Wallace, he’s a inventor, a sensitive soul, and truly man’s best friend.
8.
Perry the Platypus – Phineas and Ferb
He’s an “egg laying mammal of
action” with a cool hat.
9.
Scooby-Doo – Scooby-Doo, Where are You?
This dim-witted Great Dane was
probably the worst candidate for a paranormal investigator but the best for
comic relief.
10. Wishbone
– Wishbone
This cute little literary
terrier made reading fun and accessible. Plus, he had the 2nd best
outfits of any TV animal star.
11. Pongo
and Perdita – 101 Dalmatians
The star parents of the Disney
world.
12. Doug
– Up
This is probably the best
realization of dog communication in cinema.
13. Aslan
– The Chronicles of Narnia
Aslan isn’t so much a
traditional Christ figure as he is what the Incarnation would look like in
another Universe where many species had rational souls. As a book character, he
would be #1, but this based off the BBC and Disney franchises.
14. Sebastian
– The Little Mermaid
I really identify with Sebastian
as a parent who just wants his teenager to be safe, normal, and fulfilled.
Plus, his accent is awesome.
15. Bolt
- Bolt
Bolt was the start of the 2nd
Disney Renaissance, a loveable pooch who would do anything for his human.
16. Toothless
– How to Train Your Dragon
A cute, fun dragon who grows and
develops with his human companion over three great films.
17. Hei
Hei – Moana
This stupid chicken is
just…hilarious. How he doesn’t die thirteen times over is a miracle.
18. The
Mother of Bambi – Bambi
Kind, caring, but also strong,
the mother of the prince makes the ultimate sacrifice for her son.
19. Yeller
– Old Yeller
Yeller is the dog every kid
would want, which makes his death all the more tragic but also a necessary
element of becoming a man.
20. The
Tyrannosaurus Rex – Jurassic Park
The Velociraptors may be more
famous, but the T-Rex is clearly king of the island and the first great scare
of a generation of kids.
21. Appa
– Avatar: The Last Airbender
Yip-Yip!
22. Eddie
– Frasier
He got more fan mail than any of
human counterparts.
23. Iago
– Aladdin
Gilbert Godfrey had one of the
most iconic voices in Hollywood, and this was his best role.
24. Timon
and Pumba – The Lion King
A great comic buddy team
reminiscent of Laurel and Hardy
25. Lady
and Tramp – Lady and the Tramp
One of the great Romeo and
Juliet stories of the animal kingdom
