Bluey is the best children’s program on television today. It is warm, clever, and incredibly well written. Here are my ten favorite episodes as of 2023.
1.
Sleepytime
This is the best Bluey episode and
one of the greatest short cartoons of all time, easily rivaling the early work
of Walt Disney and Chuck Jones. Equally parts hilarious, profound, and touching,
it imagines the journey of Bingo as she travels around the solar system in her
dream, ending in a beautiful affirmation of parental (and divine) love. Plus,
it uses music from Holst’s amazing planet series.
2.
Flat Pack
Most Bluey episodes are
really good but only two are masterpieces (this and #1). Flat Pack deftly
explains the progression of life on the planet Earth not as a random process
but a cooperation between biological ingenuity and divine assistance. It then
pivots as a beautiful affirmation of Heaven and unity with God with a fun 2001
reference to boot.
3.
Dad Baby
The third best episode of the series
is also the only one never released on Disney +. The reasons are unclear, but it’s just
another sad example in Disney’s downfall. Controversy
aside, it is the funniest episode of the series as Bandit must experience the
pain and joy of childbirth with Lucky’s dad again being a reluctant victim of
the girls’ antics.
4.
Faceytime
When Bingo and Bluey make a zoom
call to their cousin Muffin, chaos reigns.
5.
Rain
Told without a single line of
dialogue but the most beautiful animation of any episode, “Rain” is a
heartwarming story of a mother and daughter relationship and the fun of
imagination.
6.
Puppets
I love it when Bluey
experiments with the animation format. Here, the little seen but always awesome
puppet Unicorse has a major existential crisis leading to one of my favorite
endings in the series.
7.
Granny Mobile
Muffin is my least favorite
character in Bluey. She is selfish, annoying, bratty, loud, and
generally just a terrible person…in other words, a typical three-year-old. Yet
even I found her nastiness hilarious as she helps her neighbor avoid
exploitation at a yard sale.
8.
Baby Race
Parenting is rough, no matter the
unique situation. This is especially true for your first child when everything
is new. Told largely through flashback, Chili is constantly worried she is
raising Bluey incorrectly because her baby is late in crawling and walking. Yet
more seasoned parents can help noobs understand that everything will be okay
and, “you’re doing great.”
9.
Onesies
A lot of talk has been made of this
“very special” episode about a character dealing with infertility, but it is
also a nice story of sibling love and childhood craziness.
10.
Fairytale
Fairytale is a fun look at Bandit’s
past childhood in the 80s and a neat origin story of the Heeler marriage.
